Founded on 5 February 1960, RUDN University was originally created to provide higher education to students from newly independent nations in Asia, Africa, Latin America, and Eastern Europe, aligning with Soviet initiatives in international education. It was initially named after Patrice Lumumba and earned a reputation as the "Oxford of Russia" in the 1980s due to its rapid growth and academic influence
Today, the university hosts around 38,500 students (approx. 25,650 undergrads and 11,450 postgrads) and is notable for its multicultural environment, with learners representing over 150–160 countries . RUDN operates 17 institutes and faculties, covering fields such as medicine, engineering, economics, law, environmental science, and humanities. It also collaborates with more than 2,500 universities and research centres worldwide
